Quinta Dona Maria – Montalvo

R. Annes de Oliveira, 2250, Portugal

Upon request

The Quinta Dona Maria in Montalvo is currently abandoned, but at the beginning of the 20th century, it was one of the most prosperous farms in the county. It had large estates in the region, where the cultivation of olive groves, vineyards and cereals prevailed. With a traditional agriculture, it occupied large numbers of men, women and children of Montalvo.

The farm buildings of Quinta Dona Maria are located on Annes de Oliveira Street, in front of the manor house where the owners lived. These buildings belonged, at the beginning of the 20th century, to Dona Maria de Serpa Pimentel, married to Fernando Falcão Themudo. Due to lack of progeny, the properties were dismembered, the family home being left to the Portalegre diocese and Quinta Dona Maria to the Falcão Themudo family.

The farm decayed in the second half of the twentieth century, and the mill was the last to close to the public in the 80’s. It had been modernized a few years earlier, since the farmhouse always had extensive olive groves and many olive trees, therefore, raw material for the winery.

Quinta Dona Maria became property of the Municipality of Constância, with the intention of transforming this space into the “Quintas do Tejo Museum”, preserving the memory of the old agricultural activities, through the utensils, equipment and tools once used by the populations and which are living testimonies of a unique time and space and an identity culture that tends to disappear.
