Tourism in Portugal Hits New Historic Records in 2025
Portugal’s tourism sector achieved historic highs across its key performance indicators in 2025. The country recorded 82 million overnight stays (a 2.1% increase compared to 2024), 32.5 million guests (+2.8%), and generated €29.1 billion in revenue, representing a year-on-year growth of 5.0%.
Key Sector Highlights:
Dominance of International Markets: Non-residents accounted for nearly 70% of total overnight stays, originating predominantly from Europe (73.5% share).
Regional Concentration and Accommodation Types: Greater Lisbon and the Algarve once again accounted for approximately half of all overnight stays. In terms of accommodation type, hotels represented 60% of total stays, followed by local short-term rentals (Alojamento Local) at 15.0%.
Top Source Markets: The United Kingdom maintained its position as the primary source market (17.7% of overnight stays), followed by Germany (11.3%), the US (9.6%), Spain (9.1%), and France (7.4%). The only shift among the top five compared to the previous year was the US surpassing Spain to take third place.
Rising Profitability: Key profitability metrics for tourism enterprises demonstrated strong upward momentum, driven notably by growth in total revenue (+6.9%) and room revenue (+6.6%).
Air Passenger Traffic: National airports reflected this broader growth trend, recording 36 million disembarking passengers—a year-on-year increase of 4.7%.
