Portugal Ranked 11th in the World Economic Forum Travel & Tourism Development Index

September, 2026

The climb to 11th place worldwide keeps Portugal within the group of highest-ranked economies in the index, immediately behind Italy, which holds 10th position.

The ranking is led by Japan, followed by the United States, Spain, Australia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Switzerland and Italy.

The 2026 edition shows a positive global evolution in the enabling conditions for tourism development: 92% of the 110 economies assessed improved their score compared to 2024, while the global average increased by 2.1%, the highest growth rate since 2019.

Of the 17 pillars assessed, 14 recorded positive global growth, notably cultural resources, tourist infrastructure and services, and air connectivity.

Portugal’s rise to 11th place in the TTDI 2026 acknowledges the dynamism, investment and adaptive capacity of the sector and reinforces the country’s position among the economies with the most favorable conditions for sustainable and resilient tourism development.

This result also provides further incentive to continue working towards the goal of placing Portugal among the 10 most competitive economies in the world.
