Tourism Satellite Account reveals new nominal highs in 2025 and multisectoral economic impact

August, 2026

Tourism Consumption in the Economic Territory reached €49,350 million, up 4.9% year-on-year, equivalent to 16.1% of GDP, while the total contribution of tourism considering the direct and indirect effects of the activity stood at €36,169 million, or 11.8% of national GDP.

The two percentages correspond to distinct perspectives: the first relates the scale of tourism consumption to GDP, while the second measures the value generated by this demand within the economy.

Of note is the impact of tourism on other branches of activity: out of the €30,358 million in total GVA associated with tourism in 2025, €21,473 million were generated directly by activities responding to visitor demand, and €8,885 million resulted from indirect effects on their respective suppliers.

The 2023 results, the most recent with detailed information, show that international demand accounted for the majority of tourism consumption in Portugal. In 2023, employment volume in tourism-characteristic activities increased by 10.6% compared to 2022, accounting for 10.4% of national employment.
